Tributes have come from the fields of politics, entertainment, sport and the community in reaction to the news of the passing of our founder and publisher, Paddy Cowan who died last Tuesday 6 October.

Those who paid tribute to Paddy ranged from the President of Ireland to people from the community. This shows how widely known and well liked Paddy was. His good friend Andrew Carey calls him ‘a man of the people’. Declan Nerney also refers to this quality when she says: “He knew how to converse with a lay man or the Pope for that matter.”

Many mention his great sense of community and his community work which was signified in his hosting of The Irish World Awards to honour achievements in all fields. The awards are counted as one of his greatest achievements by no small number of people paying tribute to him.

Father Brian D’Arcy explains how much an award from award means: “I was lucky enough to get an award from Paddy in the recent past and it was as good as an award from the Queen, to get an award from Paddy because you knew that he meant it and he was genuine.

Never shy to do his bit for community or good causes, former owner of the Galtymore Mike Byrne says, ‘If anyone ever deserved an Irish World Award it was Paddy himself’.

Another thing that comes up again and again is his sense of ‘craic’ and his sense of humour that anyone who knew him knows was a big part of his character.

President of Ireland Michael D Higgins lead the tributes to and Irish community “champion”.

“I was greatly saddened by the news of the death of Paddy Cowan, entrepreneur, publisher of The Irish World, and tireless champion of the Irish community in Britain,” he wrote.

“Sabina and I send our deepest condolences to his wife Sadie, his family, and all those whose lives he touched.”

Adrian O’Neill, Ireland’s Ambassador to the UK hailed Paddy’s “energy and exuberance.”

He wrote: “All of us at the Embassy of Ireland are very sad to hear of the death of Paddy Cowan. He was a man of immense energy and exuberance who was at the heart of the Irish community in Britain for many years. Our sincere sympathy to his wife Sadie, family, friends and all The Irish World. Ar dheis Dè.”

Dan Mulhall, Ireland’s Ambassador to the US wrote from Washington, wrote: “Greta and I are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Paddy Cowan. We got to know him well during our time in London. He was a pillar of the Irish community in Britain and always great company. We send our condolences to his wife, Sadie, and the whole Cowan family.”

Daniel O’Donnell, Margo O’Donnell, Declan Nerney and Nathan Carter were among the those paying tribute to Paddy Cowan for the help they received in launching their careers.

Country singer Margo O’Donnell said: “Paddy will be sorely, sorely missed. He brought Irish music to a new level when he started the paper. He was always there to help no matter what and many times I would have rang Paddy for a bit of advice on things I was doing. He was always there to listen and to help and I’m glad that I knew him in my lifetime. He helped all the Irish artists a great deal, me especially. I’ll miss him and I want to thank him for all the help that he gave me in my career. God rest his soul.”

Her brother Daniel O’Donnell also paid tribute.

“He was always very supportive of all of us in the music industry,” Daniel posted on his Facebook page.

“He was a huge figure in the Irish community in the UK. My deepest sympathy to his wife Sadie and all his family. May he Rest In Peace.”

Catholic beliefs about death

Roman Catholics believe in the afterlife, where a person’s soul lives on after their death, after judgement from God. A soul is judged based on their sins during life and whether they feel remorse for what they’ve done. Catholic funerals are therefore used to pray for the person who has died and support the bereaved in their grief.

What happens before a Catholic funeral service?

After a Catholic person dies, plans can be made for their funeral. Catholics can either be buried or cremated, but the Catholic Church prefers burials. A member of the family can contact a local funeral director to start planning their service.

Before the funeral, the family of the person who has died will hold a small vigil. The vigil can be held at the home of the person who has died, or the church or funeral home. This allows family and close friends to gather before the official funeral service, and say some prayers or hymns.

How long after death is a Catholic funeral?

Catholic funerals usually take place about a week after the person dies. This allows for time to make arrangements with a funeral director.

What is a Catholic funeral service like?

A Catholic funeral service is usually held in a church. Catholic funeral mass typically follows a set format, but can sometimes involve a Requiem Mass: combining the Eucharistic Prayer and Holy Communion.

During the service, the coffin or casket will be placed on a catafalque at the altar.

Catholic funeral readings and prayers

The priest will lead the funeral prayers, which will normally include a reading from the Old Testament, a psalm and a reading from one of the gospels. Sometimes members of family and friends are invited to read a prayer. The priest will also give a eulogy for the person who has died.

If the funeral services includes a Requiem Mass, bread and wine will be placed on the altar for Holy Communion. Catholic mourners will then take Holy Communion, whilst non-Catholics can receive a blessing from the priest

What hymns can be sung at Catholic funeral?

The hymns at a Catholic funeral are usually chosen by the family and sung in between the readings.

Popular hymns for Catholic funerals include ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Make Me a Channel of Your Peace’ or ‘Ave Maria’. For more ideas, speak to the priest about what hymns they feel are appropriate for the service.

How long does a Catholic funeral service last?

A Catholic funeral service can last between 40 minutes and two hours, depending on if Mass is included in the event.

What happens at a Catholic burial or cremation?

Traditionally, the Catholic Church has preferred its members to choose burial, however, cremation is allowed. If cremation is chosen instead of burial, the ashes should be buried rather than scattered.

Following the Catholic funeral mass, the coffin is moved to the burial ground. The burial or cremation begins with the Catholic Rite of Committal. Prayers are led by a priest, which end with the Catholic version of the Lord’s Prayer. Mourners may then be invited to throw a handful of dirt into the grave.

What do you say at a Catholic funeral?

When attending a Catholic funeral, guests will usually offer condolences to the grieving family. It is common to say “I’m sorry for your loss” and offer some kind words about the person who has died.

When prompted by the priest, you may need to join in with the prayers. If you are a non-Catholic attending the service, you do not need to say anything.

Do you send flowers to a Catholic funeral?

It’s common to send flowers to the family or the funeral home before a Catholic funeral. If you are unsure of where to send flowers to, you could call the family ahead of time.

Appropriate Catholic funeral flowers include:

  • White roses

  • Lilies

  • Carnations

  • Chrysanthemums

What should I wear to a Catholic funeral?

Like with other Christian funerals, it is expected that people dress conservatively, typically in black. Catholic funerals tend to be sombre, so men should wear black suits and ties. Women should wear smart dresses, skirts or trouser suits. Women should dress respectfully, avoiding short skirts, low cut tops or very high heels.

What happens after a Catholic funeral service?

After the service and burial, the family may arrange for the guests to meet back at the family home or another venue.

Unlike other religions, Catholics don’t have a set mourning period. The family of the person who has died may choose to have a memorial service following the funeral, either a few weeks later or on the first anniversary of the person’s death.

How much does a Catholic funeral cost?

Catholic funeral costs will vary depending on the area you live in and what arrangements you want to make.

The cost of a burial plot varies depending on the size and location of the space, and can be expensive. Cremations will cost less, but you would still need to buy a plot of land for the ashes if you wish to bury them.

Birmingham (/ˈbɜːrmɪŋəm/ (listenBUR-ming-əm)[4] is a major city and metropolitan borough in the West MidlandsEngland. It is the second-largest city and metropolitan area in England and the United Kingdom,[b] with roughly 1.1 million inhabitants within the city area and 4.3 million inhabitants within the metropolitan area.[5][6][7][8][9][10]Birmingham is commonly referred to as the second city of the United Kingdom.[11][12][13]

Located in the West Midlands county and region in England, approximately 100 miles (160 km) from Central London, Birmingham, as one of the United Kingdom's major cities, is considered to be the social, cultural, financial, and commercial centre of both the East and West Midlands. Distinctively, Birmingham only has small rivers flowing through it, mainly the River Tame and its tributaries River Rea and River Cole – one of the closest main rivers is the Severn, approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of the city centre. Birmingham's urban area is the second-largest in the United Kingdom, with its most recently estimated population in 2017 being 2,897,303,[10][14] and it also lies within the most populated English district.

market town in the medieval period, Birmingham grew in the 18th-century Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw advances in science, technology, and economic development, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society.[15] By 1791, it was being hailed as "the first manufacturing town in the world".[16] Birmingham's distinctive economic profile, with thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and highly skilled trades, encouraged exceptional levels of creativity and innovation and provided an economic base for prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century. The Watt steam engine was invented in Birmingham.[17]

The resulting high level of social mobility also fostered a culture of political radicalism which, under leaders from Thomas Attwood to Joseph Chamberlain, was to give it a political influence unparalleled in Britain outside London, and a pivotal role in the development of British democracy.[18] From the summer of 1940 to the spring of 1943, Birmingham was bombed heavily by the German Luftwaffe in what is known as the Birmingham Blitz. The damage done to the city's infrastructure, in addition to a deliberate policy of demolition and new building by planners, led to extensive urban regeneration in subsequent decades.

Birmingham's economy is now dominated by the service sector.[19] The city is a major international commercial centre, ranked as a beta − world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network the joint highest ranking with Edinburgh and Manchester of all British cities outside of London;[20] and an important transport, retail, events and conference hub. Its metropolitan economy is the second largest in the United Kingdom with a GDP of $121.1bn (2014),[3] and its six universities make it the largest centre of higher education in the country outside London.[21] Birmingham's major cultural institutions – the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Library of Birmingham and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts – enjoy international reputations,[22] and the city has vibrant and influential grassroots artmusicliterary and culinaryscenes.[23] The city will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.[24] Birmingham is the fourth-most visited city in the UK by foreign visitors.[25]

People from Birmingham are called Brummies, a term derived from the city's nickname of "Brum", which originates from the city's old name, Brummagem, which in turn is thought to have derived from "Bromwich-ham".[26][27] The Brummie accent and dialect are particularly distinctive.

A recent testimonial (more on the testimonial page )

“Planning a funeral is difficult enough especially when you are having the added pressure to film it live. Fortunately working in the video production industry myself I knew what I needed to do and when I spoke Darren I felt confident he and his team wouldn’t disappoint.

Nothing was too much trouble to organise and with a complex multi camera and screen set up required Darren pulled it together seamlessly.

On the day he and his team were respectful and professional and to the people that couldn’t be in the main church it enabled them to feel like they were part of the main service. I’d highly recommend”.

More about Funerals here, worth a read

funeral is a ceremony connected with the final disposition of a corpse, such as a burial or cremation, with the attendant observances.[1] Funerary customs comprise the complex of beliefs and practices used by a culture to remember and respect the dead, from interment, to various monumentsprayers, and ritualsundertaken in their honor. Customs vary between cultures and religious groups. Common secular motivations for funerals include mourning the deceased, celebrating their life, and offering support and sympathy to the bereaved; additionally, funerals may have religious aspects that are intended to help the soulof the deceased reach the afterliferesurrection or reincarnation.

The funeral usually includes a ritual through which the corpse receives a final dispositon.[2] Depending on culture and religion, these can involve either the destruction of the body (for example, by cremation or sky burial) or its preservation (for example, by mummification or interment). Differing beliefs about cleanliness and the relationship between body and soul are reflected in funerary practices. A memorial service or celebration of life is a funerary ceremony that is performed without the remains of the deceased person.[3]

The word funeral comes from the Latin funus, which had a variety of meanings, including the corpse and the funerary rites themselves. Funerary art is art produced in connection with burials, including many kinds of tombs, and objects specially made for burial like flowers with a corpse.

Funerals can be very sad times but we must also remember it’s a time to celebrate the life they had. We can help with funeral videographer, Funeral Videography  any funeral videoing

One of our own stories...

I have recently gone to my uncle’s service. It was a very moving service and a celebration about his life and all the things, he had done. It was tearful but also laughter at the things he did and the way he was.  He really was quite a character.

Many of my relatives could not make it to the service, some are too old to safely make it, some were not very able people and others just live in a different part of the world.

They would have loved to have watched the service later that evening the same day or the following day  just so they could feel part of the love, laughter and help with closure.

We can help make that happen, We can video, edit and deliver online using the internet so you can send the link to download the film that very day or the nest day. They too can join the amazing gathering of people and the respect listen to the stories.

We don't film the committal unless asked.

We are unobtrusive and very respectful and experienced
